  • Most Android Apps Are Hardly Downloaded At All – 80/20 rules in force here: 80% of Android mobile apps have been downloaded less than 100 times, showing the 'long tail' of hits to misses is proportional to other aspects of the media industries. This lends more weight to the thought that Android users are less high value than Blackberry and iPhone when looking at spend per user.
  • Keynote: How to Develop a Mobile Strategy – Presentation video and slides by Jeremiah Owyang, Altimeter, looking at the new strategy approaches needed for mobile including the 'hourglass' engagement where further loyalty is build after purchase. Presents very good example of successful marketing and commerce apps.
  • Tablets Are Money Spinners, But Less Than 5% Use Them Today | paidContent:UK – US adoption stats show smartphone are used by 1 in 3 people, but only 5% are using Tablets (compared to 9% e-readers). Perhaps tablets are the trendy edge of the more basic trend to move from print to e-readers?
  • Taking on Hargreaves’ ‘Digital Opportunity’ – Open Rights Group's mini summary of the Hargreaves Review on copyright reform for the digital age which covers fair use, evidence, policy making and licensing reform.

These are my links for August 26th through September 5th:

  • Google pays $8.5m to settle Buzz privacy invasion suit – It’s hard to feel sorry for web overlords Google, but 2010 appears to be their year of flops. After Orkut fails to gain ground, and their Google Wave failed to transform how people use email, Google Buzz have now been sued for inadvertently revealing users top contacts. Google Buzz seems to perform now better/different function to Twitter and Facebook, and is rarely used so is likely to lead to another wave goodbye moment. Interestingly, they will use the fine to support a $8.5M fund for internet prviacy organisations.
  • File sharing solicitor to face disciplinary body – Which? Report on how solicitors heavy-handed techniques to accuse (often wrongly) consumers of illegal downloading are getting them a rap on the knuckles. Which? also have a useful guide to how to respond to an accusation of file-sharing. No doubt the implementation of the Digital Economy Bill will mean consumer should arm themselves with a better understanding of their legal rights.
  • Crowd Sourcing HealthCare: Sustainable Digital Strategy for the Pharmaceutical Industry – An interesting comparison between lessons in social media monitoring, niche markets and crowd sourcing in the music industry, care of WIRED editor Chris Anderson, and how it can apply to the pharmaceutical industry.

Most believe planning and delivering on social media is the main responsibility of the marketing department. Whatever happened to joined-up thinking?
  • Legal considerations for people responsible for websites – Useful little primer and links for legal responsibilities for those running websites, explaining a bit about your responsibilities as moderators and for data protection.
  • Marketing week: Digital Strategy supplement – Marketing bible Marketing Week have a selection of useful articles on digital strategy including the important of data, search and social media in making marketing decisions.
  • Consumer health trends – Useful stats from Creation Healthcare on international health search trends in relation to digital engagement.
  • Manual for bands and brands – Brand sponsorship of bands is probably the biggest growth area for investment in music. This mini e-book (a sort of commercial tribute to the Bill Drummond 'How to Have a No 1' Manual) has some good food for thought on what as a band you need to consider to make the partnership work.
