These are my links for April 6th through April 10th:

  • Clegg’n'Cameron seek Director of Digital • The Register – Not a ‘Twitter Tsar’ (apparently) but the UK government now seek someone to head up their far-reaching digital ambitions, replacing several other roles that seem to have achieved little in recent years (like the rarely Tweeting Director of Digital Engagement).
  • Sharing Content To Show Thought Leadership – Why do marketers curate and share content? Top of the list is establishing thought leadership, according to this US survey. Added benefits include lead generation and boosting SEO, although this is not the main motivation.
  • Pepsi on social media metrics – Pepsi’s Head of Digital, Shiv Singh on how they measure metrics for social media: “SIM score, which is like a digital brand health metric. The premise behind it is that what consumers say about us is more important than anything that we say. It’s an indexed competitive score looking at how our brand is doing compared to our competitors, indexed on a hundredth scale. The formula accounts for volume and sentiment, and then weighted by platform.”
  • Elements of local digital ecosystems – | DavePress presents a neat summary of the types of actors and activities that make up a local digital ecology.
  • Report into social media excellence published – Summary of Gartner’s report into 200 successful operations using social media. It’s all about gathering together and understand your community of interest.

These are my links for November 2nd through November 3rd:

  • Constant Transformation Is the New Normal – Piece by disruptive innovation expert Scott Anthony on how 'business as usual' ain't coming back: you need to be customer-focused, adaptable to change and have distinct, autonomous spaces for innovation.
  • Lord Mandelson sets date for blocking filesharers’ internet connections – In full: the timetable and approach for UK government to impose the "three strikes and your offline" policy to tackle file-sharing; which, interestingly, WASN'T a recommendation of Lord Carter's Digital Britain report from this year.
  • A fistful of (internet) dollars – The Guardian have produced this useful round up showing the size of the digital industries (music, TV, film, games, publishing) in 2000 compared to now, and how they are siddling with Lord Mandelson and the government on the issues around downloading and regulation.
  • To Be a Better Leader, Give Up Authority – Prof Vlatka Hlupic believes that in complex trading environments in knowledge industries, the leader who delegates more control to their workers can see improved levels of innovation and results. Command and control models are broke.
  • Expansive English Game Development Hub Discussed – The long-running 'games centre of excellence' proposal seems to be zoning in on becoming a reality, with a research, training and testing facility mooted to be established in MediaCity in Salford – which could put the noses out of joint in Liverpool, where most of the North West games industry are based.

These are my links for September 23rd through September 30th:

  • Lily Allen ‘quits music’ after abuse over file-sharing fight – A sad and mixed story, heady with pop stars and government spin doctors…Lily Allen, the supposed MySpace heroine, blogger and Twitter, claims to be knocking music on head due to abuse to her support of Peter Mandelson's 'three strikes and your out' policy regarding illegal downloading. Her siding with the music biz and government probably hasn't done her fanbase much digital-indie cred, but that's the problem with making file-sharing illicit – it's an industry built on getting into trouble with authority.
  • Thompson signals review will reduce size of BBC – Looks like the Beeb are publicly planning for the savage budget cuts likely to follow in what Director General Mark Thompson describes as a move from 'both-and' to 'either or'. The additional digital channels and web services, I wonder, if will be likely to be viewed as less essential. I suspect younger audiences will keep their digital, olders shows will see web tie-ins cut back.
