  • Arab countries ‘need a long-term digital strategy’ – I've never really considered e-strategy in the Middle East – it's not the first territory you think of when considering a high tech hub, yet countries like Oman have already invested in growing their marketplace for e-commerce and digital. According to this press release countries like Iraq don't have sufficiently developed digital strategy. Well having a safe country and telecom network may be a bit of an issue here.
  • The Register comment guidelines 2010 – I thought these guidelines for a heavily commented on blog were pretty sensible and worth adapting for your own community site.
  • Universal broadband delayed until 2015 – Another government U-Turn: the much mooted 2Mbs broadband we've been promised won't arrive until 2015, 3 years later than scheduled. The government say they are "totally committed" to having the best broadband service in Europe, but given how far we are lagging behind our European neighbours in the advancements, and right to access, faster broadband, this is more hot air.
  • Who owns your social media? – Superb article on the internal challenges a business faces in 'owning' a social media strategy, and the conflict and opportunity between the needs of different internal teams and departments:<br />

  • Apps, Apps, and more Apps – Some beautiful design and facts on the market for mobile apps. I think this is a US only view, but the stats are quite stark: Symbian is the most popular platform by 3 to 1, far ahead of Blackberry, and trailed by iPhone. 90% of App developers don't make a sustainable return-on-investment. Are apps the news promotional tool rather than the saviour of monetizing online content?

  • What’s App? A look at the emerging apps economy – An article by Wired editor David Rowan on the international market for mobile apps – lots of revenue opportunities, lots of platforms, lots of potential dilution of opportunities.
  • Second Wednesday – Nottingham web industry social April Meetup – I'm speaking at this event on Wednes 14 April – a very informal get together of web people around a big table in Nottingham, I'll be talking about what exactly digital strategy is for web tech people. It's totally free.
  • Digital culture : Creative Choices – A set of articles (a mixed bag in terms of relevancy but overall good selection) to help people working in the education and cultural sector to deliver digital projects, including functional specs, user experience and producing content.

  • The Collective Intelligence Genome – Fascinating findings from research from MIT's Centre for Collective Intelligence showing ways you can use open source development or 'crowd sourcing' as part of a production or decision making process.
  • One-third of users willing to pay for apps – Interesting mobile stats: just 35% of mobile users willing to pay for apps, highest in iPhone users, lowest in Android, although Blackberry users pay far more than iPhone users on average per app. This is definitely the growth area for digital content and services development, showing users will pay up for mobile content. But it shows that the serious money isn't in iPhone and producers should look at spreading their production and distribution across multiple mobile platforms.
  • SEO 101: Everything You Need to Know About SEO (But Were Afraid to Ask) – Regular readers of this blog will know I'm no big fan of SEO (or 'snake something oil' as one social media guy I know described it) but in recent months I've mellowed on the subject – when using good navigation, good content and good structures supports people to find and discover good content I'm all for it and there's no doubt it's the affordable way for a small business to draw traffic to their e-commerce site. This is a brilliant guide – one of those that you can read and learn about 80% of what you need to know about SEO in one quick hit. Which is good because it means less time spent reading about SEO…

These are my links for February 3rd through February 5th:

  • Telegraph to stop chasing unique users – The publishing industry is moving away from chasing numbers of readers (strange as that's their print model) and is looking to create commercial channels that favour engagement rather than quick hit read and leave, common with online news. It's an interesting bent, as it signifies that even readership – the wholly grail of on and offline publication – becomes less significant in the need to upsell. No doubt they are taking the lead from The Times who are rumoured to be introducing specialist, paid channels in niche subjects.
  • Building a hyperlocal website: 5 things hyperlocal can do and be, times 5 – As a founding member of CreativeNottingham.com, I'm speaking at an event in March about local blogging, so this article interviewing some of the biggest names in UK and US in hyperlocal blogging with their thoughts on how local blogging provides an immediate, powerful force against the merging of newspapers is very interesting.
  • App Recommendations from MediaCampLondon – I was at MediaCamp London on Monday, which was a great get together organised by London's social media mafia as an unconference to talk about all things to do with the social web. My highlights were Heather Taylor from Paypal talk on filming video interviews for the web which had some extremely useful advice for my new video content project, and Caron Jane Lyon from PCM Creative getting everyone to talk about their 'Doh-Ray-Me' of their social media journey – how they came to it, why and how it is useful to them. In the extreme tech category, this talk by Jamie Riddell discussing apps (mainly for iPhone but some Twitter and more general web apps) has some extremely useful links for those who are running community or business projects in social media marketing.
