These are my links for April 11th through April 13th:

  • Twitter releases new advertising platform: promoted tweets. – Twitter finally has a business model – and with it we have yet another social platform to advertise on. Twitter adverts will work like Google Pay-Per-Click keywords apearing at the start of search results.
  • Top 10 YouTube Videos About The Web – Here's a bit of linkbait waiting to be linked to…the most popular web video based on viewers – several parodies and homages to social media stars and culture, some fascinating historic videos of the internet and some knowledge enhancing pieces on the history of the internet and the future of publishing. A fascinating collection.
  • Tribal DDB Briefing: iPad – What it is and what it means to your digital strategy – Great summary of the iPad, it's features and how you can develop a content and monetisiation strategy for Apple's shiniest, newest portal web device.

These are my links for April 7th from 02:05 to 20:23:

  • What’s App? A look at the emerging apps economy – An article by Wired editor David Rowan on the international market for mobile apps – lots of revenue opportunities, lots of platforms, lots of potential dilution of opportunities.
  • Second Wednesday – Nottingham web industry social April Meetup – I'm speaking at this event on Wednes 14 April – a very informal get together of web people around a big table in Nottingham, I'll be talking about what exactly digital strategy is for web tech people. It's totally free.
  • Digital culture : Creative Choices – A set of articles (a mixed bag in terms of relevancy but overall good selection) to help people working in the education and cultural sector to deliver digital projects, including functional specs, user experience and producing content.

These are my links for March 14th from 12:13 to 17:21:

  • Fans, Friends & Followers: Building an Audience and a Creative Career in the Digital Age – Here's a great time-limited gift: download Scott Kirsner's free e-book 'Fans, Friends and Followers' (132 pages) but ONLY for the duration of the SXSW festival. It's a great idea for how independent creatives can begin to forge careers using online and social marketing tools. And a great example of creating scarcity in the (abundant) digital age – grab it while you can!
  • Strategy Basics: It’s Really all about having a Plan – The smart thinking people at Carsonified, the web design specialists, have a smart view about developing a strategy: "At the heart of it all “strategy” is just about having a plan for the thing you are working on."<br />
They use the example of creating a useful iPhone content app to meet a client's sales goals.
  • Tories promise fast broadband – The election fight is heating up, and broadband is becoming another leverage of differentiation: Tories say the majority will have 100Mbs fast broadband by next parliament, Labour want universal access at lower levels (2Mb) by 2012 and superfast by 2017. Interesting split and not an unexpected divide: Labour want access for all quickly, Tories want quicker access for some giving industry in cities a competitive advantage globally. Whoever wins the election, we should see the speeding up of networks as a priority.

These are my links for January 29th through January 30th:

  • Social Media Marketing: How Pepsi Got It Right – Pepsi are another major brand who are dropping their Superbowl ad this year and diverting the $20M (!) into social media engagement campaign. Staggeringly their crowd-sourced new brand development Mountain Dew gained traction from half a million Pepsi fans. This show, where brand loyalty exists, social media is a superb way of using fans to test the market and create word-of-mouth engagement. Big bucks thrown at social media will shift the landscape again, perhaps not all in a postiive way for smaller businesses.
  • CIPD – Social networking for HR – I'm speaking at this CIPD event on 4 Feb in Kettering with Alec McPhedran from Skills Channel TV. We're talking about social media for HR professional and developing social media strategies.
  • The state of social learning and some thoughts for the future of L&D in 2010 – Detailed article with links to top 100 social learning resources and how learning professional are using digital/online tools within learning contexts.

These are my links for January 27th through January 28th:

  • We7 Trying Premium Subs As Question Hangs Over Free-With-Ads – More evidence that the salvation of free music streaming sites to counteract illegal downloads isn't stacking up: We7 emulate Spotify by selling subscriptions to meet the shortfall of advertising incomes. One limitation seems to be that ad agencies aren't used to selling audio pre-roll adverts, or producing them (WeBuyAnyCar.com anyone?)
  • Digital Strategy: Removing the Social Media Roadblocks – Some solid advice from Digalicious on how to proof your case, particularly in a corporate or bigger business environment, to proof the case and examine risks of adopting a social media strategy, from a CEO, legal, HR and marketers case.
  • MP3 pioneers launch ‘deluxe’ file – A new format to rival the MP3 and compete with Apple's new iTunes LP bunding in lyrics, song information and even other files like videos with an MP3. However, is this just for the multimedia-philes, when the 'good enough' cheaper (and smaller) MP3 files are likely to suffice for many? I find it interesting that now digital files are also becoming 'deluxe', which could lead to increases in legitimate file purchases.
